What to Expect at a TeamSmile Program

What Makes TeamSmile Unique

TeamSmile is the only national nonprofit that partners oral health professionals with professional sports teams to provide life-changing dental care to underserved children in a fun, high-energy environment. By transforming stadiums and arenas into dental clinics for a day, TeamSmile creates an experience that children are excited to be part of—one where athletes, mascots, music, and games work hand-in-hand with dental professionals to break down fear and build trust. This innovative model not only delivers vital preventive and restorative care, but also connects children to long-term dental homes, reinforcing the message that oral health is a crucial part of overall well-being. Through this unique fusion of sports, community, and healthcare, TeamSmile delivers both smiles and lasting impact.

Interactive Entertainment for the Children

At TeamSmile, we believe dental care should be a positive and memorable experience. That’s why every program includes a variety of fun activities to keep kids engaged and smiling throughout the day:

  • Meet-and-greets with professional athletes, cheerleaders, and team mascots

  • Upbeat music and dancing

  • Interactive games and face painting

  • And plenty of surprises to make the day unforgettable!

Dental Screening

Each child receives a limited dental exam to assess their oral health, identify any signs of decay or other concerns, and determine if further treatment is needed.

X-Rays

If the initial screening indicates the need for restorative treatment, dental x-rays are taken to provide a clearer view of the child’s teeth. This allows the dental team to accurately diagnose and plan the appropriate care.

Preventative Care Services

For children who don’t require restorative treatment, TeamSmile offers a full range of preventive services to help maintain healthy smiles and prevent future dental issues.

Each child receives:

  • A professional dental cleaning

  • Oral health education to reinforce good habits at home

  • Fluoride varnish application to strengthen teeth

  • Sealants to protect against cavities

  • Silver Diamine Fluoride (SDF) to help stop early decay and strengthen enamel

By focusing on prevention, we empower children with the tools, knowledge, and confidence to care for their oral health long after the event ends—setting them on the path to a lifetime of healthy smiles.

Restorative Dental Care

Based on screening and x-ray findings, licensed dentists provide restorative care tailored to each child’s individual needs—all at no cost to their families.

Services may include:

  • Fillings to treat dental decay

  • Primary and permanent tooth extractions

  • Stainless steel crowns for added protection and durability

  • Root canal therapy

  • Sealants to prevent future cavities

  • Silver Diamine Fluoride (SDF) applications to help stop decay and strengthen enamel

These services not only address existing dental issues but also help set the foundation for long-term oral health.

Oral Health Education Station

In this station, children receive hands-on education and personalized guidance on how to care for their teeth.

  • They learn proper brushing and flossing techniques directly from dental professionals.

  • Each child receives their own toothbrush and toothpaste to take home—equipping them with the tools needed to maintain healthy habits.

  • Children are also introduced to basic dietary guidance, helping them understand how the foods they eat impact both their oral and overall health—reinforcing the vital connection between the mouth and body.

Dental Home Project – Powered by DentaQuest

TeamSmile’s commitment to children’s oral health doesn’t end when the event is over. Through the Dental Home Project powered by DentaQuest, we help connect children who don’t have a regular dentist with trusted dental care providers in their community. Whether through Medicaid-supported services or pro bono care, these connections ensure that children continue receiving the preventive and restorative care they need—long after the stadium lights go out. It’s how TeamSmile builds a lasting foundation for better health and brighter futures.
